Yin Yoga
Wednesdays at 7:15 pm and Sundays at 12:30 pm
Wednesday classes runs for 60 minutes, Sunday class runs for 90 minutes
Location: Stone Room (room temperature)
A slower, meditative movement form, Yin Yoga is designed to lengthen connective tissue, detoxify the body and quiet the mind. Yin Yoga creates balance for people engaged in regular Yang-style (muscle-building) exercise. It is also recommended for individuals who require accommodation due to physical limitations, because the postures generally occur on the floor and are designed to be adapted to the needs of the individual. Yin Yoga helps to maintain the body’s flexibility and relieve the mental and physical stresses of everyday life.
This class will include a series of grounding postures aimed at reducing inflammation in the deeper tissues of the body and creating space in the joints. Props and supports are used when necessary to support balance and deep release from posture to posture.
All levels of yogic experience are welcome.
Other benefits of Yin Yoga include:
- therapeutic healing of scar tissue in the body
- calming a restless mind
- relieving of compression in the joints and spine
The class will also observe:
- guided meditation in closure
- posture series that honor vata balancing (during the fall series)
- grounding pranayama (breath work)
Michelle Girouard began her yogic journey in 1997, by observing restorative yoga, meditation and pranayama. Her practice has carried her to the study of Reiki, yogic sound and chant, therapeutic yoga, sacred activism and shamanism. She trained as a yoga instructor at the Kripalu School of Yoga in 2008. She now observes a daily practice of Ashtanga yoga balanced with Yin/Restorative yoga, chant and pranayama.
