In Ashtanga Yoga each movement of the body is linked with an inhale or exhale as the student moves through a series of postures. Students learn how to use internal strength to move with ease through even the most difficult asanas, and how to focus their attention to create a steady mind. By practicing regularly, students become strong, steady and adaptable in their body, in their mind, and in their life.

The traditional format for instruction of Ashtanga Yoga is referred to as “Mysore Style.” Instead of being led as a group by the teacher, students “practice” the method under the supervision of the teacher. This allows the regular and dedicated students to deepen their practice in ways a generic led class does not permit. It is also an ideal format for new students – the first time a student comes to class they will be given instruction in a few basic postures which they can then practice on their own for the time remaining in the class. Each time a student returns they are given further instruction at the discretion of the teacher. It offers new students what they need as they are not expected to complete a full 90 minutes if they are not physically accustomed to it, and I can also give them more personal attention than I could in a regular led class. This format is ideal for students who intend on practicing regularly and are seeking to develop a teacher-student relationship.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga was taught for seven decades by Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. He learned the method from his guru Sri T Krishnamacharya. During his lifetime Pattabhi Jois taught thousands of students who traveled from all over the world to study with him. Today, his grandson R. Sharath carries out the lineage and the tradition as the director of the school in Mysore that his grandfather started.

MichaelMichael Carter has been practicing Yoga daily since 1999, and has been teaching yoga for over 10 years to students of all ages and all abilities. His quest has lead him to many great teachers in Canada, the U.S., and India. Principal amoung them are the Jois Family, Paul and Rachelle Gold, and Yoganand Michael Carrol.
